Columbus, OH — Today, Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther’s sole opponent in this year’s mayoral election pathetically attempted to politicize a recent tragedy near the Ohio State University by making unsubstantiated claims and sharing unconfirmed information with the press. Joe Motil’s statement contains zero real solutions to reduce gun violence.

For years, Mayor Ginther has continuously been on the front lines when it comes to reducing violent crime in Columbus, increasing officer training, investing in crime reduction and youth safety in all of Columbus’ neighborhoods to make us the safest city in America. In response to Mr. Motil’s brazen and downright desperate act of twisting the truth, Mayor Ginther’s campaign issued the following response:

“Mr. Motil is pathetically attempting to politicize a Columbus tragedy for his own political and personal gains. Motil is simply trying to remain relevant in front of voters who have rejected him for three decades straight. Inciting fear through pushing unconfirmed information to media outlets to capitalize on tragedy is not leadership and does not make our community safer.

“In contrast, Mayor Ginther continues to lead the fight to reduce gun violence and invest in neighborhood safety across the city, despite being met at every turn with opposition from radical and extreme lawmakers who think they know how to govern better than us. The Mayor’s message to lawmakers and the community remains clear, get onboard and help reduce crime, or get out of our way,” said Ginther campaign spokesperson Cameron Keir.
